Best Paper Award at IEEE SMC-IT 2025 for Joint Paper with Fraunhofer IIS

Our employee Martin Ottens was already working as a research assistant at Fraunhofer IIS before joining the Computer Science 7 lab.
Together with Moritz Thome from Fraunhofer IIS, he contributed to the development of software and infrastructure components for the Fraunhofer On-Board Processor (FOBP), which can be used for telecommunications experiments on the German GEO satellite Heinrich-Hertz.

A subproject of this collaboration was scientifically outlined in the paper “Infrastructure for In-Space Radiation Monitoring proven on a GEO Satellite Mission”, which was presented at the IEEE conference Space Mission Challenges for Information Technology (SMC-IT). The conference was held jointly with the IEEE Space Computing Conference (SCC) from July 28 to August 1, 2025, at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, USA.

The submitted paper was honored with the Best Paper Award – a special recognition of the scientific and application-oriented quality of the contribution.

In addition to engaging discussions with international participants on IT challenges in deep space missions, the conference offered numerous highlights. These included an exclusive tour of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and an inspiring keynote by Lindy Elkins-Tanton, Principal Investigator of NASA’s Psyche mission, during the official conference dinner.
