Satellite Networks

Design, Architecture and Quality of Service

in winter term 2026/2027

New Event

With this new event, we are expanding our curriculum to include a lecture on the topic of networks.
In this lecture, we introduce the concepts of satellite network design, routing architecture and Quality of Service (QoS) management within the ground and space segments.

The lecture contents can be summarized as follows:

  • Fundamentals of satellite communication – orbits, parameters, constellations, link budget analysis and evolution towards 6G-NTN
  • Satellite network design – mega-constellations (RF and optical), time variant graphs, representation of data traffic
  • Routing architecture – space segment forwarding plane design, path computation algorithms, routing protocols, traffic engineering and case-study on AI based techniques
  • Network management – on-board queue management, scheduling policy, store-and-forward, satellite network resource management and fault tolerance
  • Modeling and simulation – network component modeling and simulation, transition to network
emulation and roadmap towards real-world deployment.

  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts and methods in satellite communications and networking.
  • Understand the modeling of network components in ground and space segments adhering to the QoS requirements
  • Use of AI methods where applicable.
