Towards an Evaluation Framework for Co-Simulation Middlewares
The integration of complex, multi-domain models through co-simulation frameworks is essential for the analysis of modern cyber-physical systems. However, the landscape of available tools presents a critical challenge: prominent frameworks like the performance-oriented HELICS and the data-centric DaceDS are built on different implementations and architectural principles. The performance trade-offs between these decentralized and centralized models under various operational loads remain largely unquantified, leaving engineers and researchers without clear guidance for framework selection. This thesis introduces a robust and reproducible benchmarking framework designed to systematically discover performance differences between co-simulation frameworks. By providing a direct, quantitative comparison of their scalability, throughput, and data handling capabilities, this work provides guidance for selecting the most suitable co-simulation architecture for specific requirements.
